Special Savings On Disney Resorts

As a kid, I remember it seemed forever for July to arrive — all those long, lazy days of summer. Now, as an adult the summer days zip by. Even though it seems like the summer is almost gone, it is not too late to plan that trip to Walt Disney World and even cash in on some great savings.

Disney Resort hotels are offering a 35% savings on stays in select rooms at all the resorts, beginning August 9 through September, 2009. With  these special rates, Value Resort rooms begin at $69.00; Moderate Resort rooms - $96.00; Deluxe Resort rooms - $149.00 and Deluxe Villas - $169.00.

Along with the magically affordable rates, as a guest at the resort you will receive all the additional benefits:

Click here for more information and reservation assistance. Reservation must be booked by August 8, 2009.

Traditionally, the crowd sizes at the theme parks are smaller during this time as many schools return to classes.  If your school begins after labor day, or if you have pre-schooler, this is a great time to visit.  Say Hello to Mickey for me!

Proud To Be An American

More than 1,000 immigrants will gather at Main Street, U.S.A. in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom on July 3rd to take place in a moving ceremony of citizenship as each of them will be “sworn-in” as a US citizen.

In a celebration hosted by Disney Parks and Resorts and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, immigrants from 100 countries ranging in age from 18 - 82, will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.  Following several speeches, including a keynote address from actor, Andy Garcia, a naturalized citizen himself, there will be a showing of the colors, playing of the national anthem, the administration of the Oath and a reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

During a year long Disney theme of “What Will You Celebrate?” it seems very fitting to honor these individuals with a celebration of their new citizenship.  As part of the celebration these new citizens,  their families and friends will be invited to be among the first to view the newly renovated  attraction “The Hall of Presidents: A Celebration of Liberty’s Leaders”, prior to its reopening on July 4th.

What a better way to start of the Independence Day weekend!  Congratulations and welcome to each and every one of you!!

Anyone for a BLT?

We have a small garden in our backyard, tomatoes, peppers, herbs — or I guess I should say, had a garden as it appears all the neighborhood rabbits have decided it is a nightly “all you can eat” diner!!  Dreams of a ripe tomato from my own garden make me so envious whenever I visit Living with the Land in The Land Pavilion at Epcot.

I had always dismissed this attraction as, dare I say, boring, until I was in desperate need of diversion from the long line at Soarin’.  However, this slow-moving, air-conditioned boat ride mixes a little science with horticulture and is really interesting.  As you approach the experimental greenhouses, Living with the Land turns visually amazing.

Fruits and Vegetables are grown here like you have never seen before or like anywhere in the world. Plants hanging and growing in mid-air, without soil or lemons that weigh 9 lbs. — lemonade anyone?  Our family favorite is the Mickey Mouse shaped cucumbers, watermelons and pumpkins that are grown here.

But what makes me the most envious is the tomato tree.  Yes, I said tomato TREE.  And not just any tomato tree, an officially recognized Guinness World Record Holder with a one year record of producing 32,000 tomatoes for a total weight of 1,151.84 pounds from a single vine.  The golf ball-sized tomatoes are harvested and served at Disney Resort restaurants.

So the next time you are at Epcot, don’t wait for an excuse to visit Living with the Land.  I know you will find it fascinating and will have you planting your own garden when you return home.  Go ahead, the rabbits will love you for it!!

So Long, Stitch!!

Not so very long ago, I wrote a post about the coming of a new attraction to Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom, Stitch’s Supersonic Celebration.  I then followed up with another post when the celebration began in early May.

If you have been waiting to visit Experiment 626 and this new attraction, wait no more as,sadly, tomorrow, June 27th, the Celebration for Stitch will end.

There has been no word from Disney officials as to what, if anything will take the place of this attraction.  So for now, Stitch, Aloha!

PhotoPass Professional Portraits with a Resort Backdrop

Previous posts have discussed the benefits of the Disney PhotoPass with the expert photographers capturing those precious vacation memories.

Take the photo experience one step further by scheduling a photo session at one of the Disney Resort hotels to capture not only memories, but lasting portraits.  Portrait sessions with a Disney professional photographer may be scheduled 30 days in advance by calling (407) 934-4004.

At that time you select which resort hotel will serve as your picturesque backdrop –

Every location has it’s unique photographic vantage point from beaches, rolling lawns, a tropical atmosphere or even a hammock to name just a few.

The price for a 20 minute session is $49.95 and includes a package of seven selected poses.  For an additional $50.00 guests can purchase the photo CD containing all photos taken during the session to print as you choose, enlargements, wallets, and even holiday cards.

I have always wanted a portrait of my children on the beach in their crisp white outfits.  Now that I know how easy it is to make the arrangements, this is definitely something that will be checked off the “to-do” list soon.

Slow Down, You Move Too Fast!!

So many times when we arrive at Magic Kingdom we zip through the main entrance, dodge traffic and strollers down Main Street and are off to tackle that list of rides and attractions we just have to see today! I am as guilty as the next with my index cards in my pocket, and by golly we are going to see it all!! But because of this speed and zest to beat the crowds there are so many, dare I say smaller attractions, we miss along the way.

For instance, Disney travelers, did you realize that as you stand and look down through Main Street, U.S.A. your eyes see rows of small shops and business establishments, but actually there are only four buildings. Designed after Walt Disney’s hometown as it looked in the 1900’s, the colorfully painted storefronts of the past include the Newstand, Harmony Barbershop and Le Chapeau Hat Shoppe, an absolute must stop to pick up those Mickey Mouse Ears Hats.

Stop in at City Hall for answers to all your questions.  Cast members will be happy to present you with a celebration recognition button in honor of your 1st visit, birthday or anniversary.  You may even run into Mayor Weaver, who might make you an honorary Citizen of the Day.

At Town Square Exposition Hall you can browse through the displays and exhibits.  Toward the back of the expo are several photo sets from Disney movies including cut-out characters.  Have a great time posing for pictures here.

Instead of darting through the crowds down Main Street, hop aboard one of the Main Street Vehicles in Town Square for a ride straight to Cinderella’s Castle.  You may find horse-drawn trolleys, old-fashioned cars, a street car, even an antique fire engine.  If the horses are taking a break, you can sometimes find them in the Car Barn.  Stop by, they love you to visit.

Don’t forget each day at 5:00 pm is the flag retreat ceremony held in Town Square.

I must caution you however, Main Street U.S.A. can be extremely crowded during parade and closing times. Even though there are no major rides or attractions on Main Street, U.S.A, if you take your time, I guarantee you will enjoy it.  So at least once, slow down and take it all in.

Happy Father’s Day

Spending Father’s Day at Disney World? May I suggest you serve Dad what he craves most for dinner — a thick, juicy steak.  There are several up-scale steakhouses to choose from the large list of restaurants at Walt Disney World Resort.  Each with its own unique features.  The list includes:

  • Le Cellier Steakhouse – Canada Pavilion, Epcot — slightly less expensive than the others, this theme park steakhouse grills a pretty good steak.  The dining area is located in a lower level and is decorated to resemble the wine cellar of a chateau-like hotel. Cool and dark in contrast to the hot Florida sun.
  • Shula’s Steakhouse – Disney’s Dolphin Resort — part of a national chain, this high-end steakhouse in the Dolphin Resort serves a very good steak.  The decor is dark and has the feel as if important business decisions are being made at every table.  If Dad is a football fan, he will be sure to love all the memorabilia of the 1972 undefeated Miami Dolphins, coached by none other than, Don Shula.
  • Yachtsman Steakhouse – Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club — this steakhouse is also toward the high-end restaurant market, though somewhat lighter and airier in atmosphere than the others.  The sommelier will be happy to make some recommendations for wine to accompany your dinner.

Reservations may be made, and are highly suggested for all of these restaurants, by calling (407) WDW-DINE.

Enjoy a wonderful meal with your father!  Happy Father’s Day!
