Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Introduces Captain Jack Sparrow inside Pirates of the Caribbean
In late 2006, Disney Imagineers completed a much-publicized project to add characters from Disney Studios’ enormously popular “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” movie to the long-standing Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in Walt Disney World. My family and I have been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride several times since the renovations were completed, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the minor changes.
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride has always been one of my favorites ever since my childhood. It was always the first ride my family would go on during our annual vacations to Walt Disney World. I was very reluctant to embrace the addition of movie characters to my beloved ride even though I am a big fan of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise. Once I rode through the ride with the new characters and effects in place, my opinion changed. The changes are not dramatic and do not affect the integrity of the original attraction. In fact, the changes enhance the original ride by adding new elements of suspense and humor.
Without giving everything away, I can highlight a few of the biggest changes. There is an impressive new effect in the cave at the beginning of the ride featuring a misty presence of Davey Jones. Later, riders will find Jack Sparrow hiding in various, humorous places as pirates pillage and plunder through town. The animatronics of the Jack Sparrow character are phenomenal, and the resemblance to Johhny Depp, who played Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, is remarkable.
The biggest change happens with the addition of Jack Sparrow to the final jail scene of the ride. This is a great new feature as boats often stack up here waiting to unload. Now, visitors can enjoy watching Captain Jack and listening to his humorous speech as they wait to disembark and head off to their next adventure at Walt Disney World.
