Walt Disney World Theme Park Ticket Price Increase – Again!

It’s going to cost an extra $4 per ticket to get into the theme parks at Walt Disney World starting today!  Anyone over 10 years of age will have to cough up $75 for a one-day, one-park ticket (up 5.6% from $71), and a ticket for a child between the ages of 3-9 will cost $63 for one-day, one-park (up 5% from $60).

Prices have also gone up for the Magic Your Way ticket options, the Park Hopper option, and Florida resident tickets.

Add all these increases to stiff parking fees and it’s amazing that anyone can afford to go to Walt Disney World anymore.  Of course, Disney isn’t the only theme park charging extraordinarily high prices.  SeaWorld charges $69.95 per day and Universal is currently at $71 per day.  Think of how much a family has to pay in gas, parking, park tickets, meals and drinks for a day at a theme park in Central Florida.  Even if you get a multi-day ticket or bundle the ticket price in with a resort hotel vacation, it’s a crazy amount of money.

What do you think?  Are these prices going to force people to choose other entertainment options aside from Walt Disney World and similarly priced theme parks?

In response to the high gas prices, I had heard of families having a “staycation” where they stay at home and spend time together. I think that’s a healthy approach to the situation, but there is still some value to getting away.

Theme parks are making it awfully hard to justify the price of entry for the average family, so families have to get creative. I wonder if local campgrounds are likely to see an increase in attendance with formal vacations becoming so pricey?

From a purely business, stockholder perspective…The cost of everything goes up. Disney World is a business, too. Their operating costs have sky rocketed this year. I think a modes increase is justifiable. As long as the market will continue to come, then they should do what they need to do to keep making a profit. Besides, the parks have been too crowded lately.

From the aspect of a guest, the only people who pay $75 are those who go for 1 day and pay at the gate. You can get tickets to Disney for less than $20/day (or at least you could before the price increase) if you bought for more days. On average, I usually pay less than $40/day for an adult ticket. Considering what I get for my $40 compared to other entertainment options like movies, golf, professional sports, etc. I’d say it’s still a good deal. I suspect the other 44 million or so people who visit Disney World every year would agree.

Every time they raise the price people complain. That’s what we do when prices go up. But the fact of the matter is, they’ve been eating price increases all year. I for one don’t mind a small price increase for quality entertainment.

Great points, Joel. I do think you get a lot for that $75. With the price increase, 10-day tickets now cost $23 per day, so the less than $20/day option is over now, but $23 per day is a good value. I’m an annual passholder, which is something I always suggest that visitors look into, because they often end up being cheaper than multi-day passes.
