Fort Wilderness Refurbs Moving Full Speed Ahead at Walt Disney World

fort wilderness disney world Back in April, I published a post about major refurbishments coming to Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World.  Now, more details are coming out about the camping destination’s overhaul, and it all sounds great.

In addition to the changes I wrote about in April (which you can read by following the link above), the Orlando Sentinel reports that you’ll soon see, “Segway scooter tours, a mini-water park, a dog park and an improved electric-cart rental operation.”

If you visited Walt Disney World some 15 years ago or so (or earlier), then you might remember Disney’s original water park, River Country, which included a pool and old fashioned water hole slides, zip-lines, and more.  River Country closed years ago with the opening of Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, but much of the original water park remains intact.

Now, Disney is thinking of ways to move or recycle the original River Country water tower landmark to the Fort Wilderness pool.  But that’s not all.  They’re also thinking of a way to add a slide to the water tower.  Sounds like it might be a similar concept to the slide that goes through the pirate ship at Stormalong Bay at the Beach Club Resort.

A final new piece of news – The Meadows pool at Fort Wilderness will also get a new splash-zone attraction.

Sounds like great changes (and long overdue) are coming to Fort Wilderness.  What do you think?

I’ve been thinking it’s about time to take my kids camping; maybe this offers and easy and fun way to ease ourselves into this new activity. I never got the chance to enjoy River Country and think a new, more relaxed water park might be a great alternative to the splash & flash of the other water parks.

Scott, I think you make a great point. Camping at Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness is definitely a safe way to give camping a test run! It’s camping but with all the conveniences (and Disney parks) right outside your door!

We took the kids on our first camping trip to FW and they loved it and we’ve been back since.

Now, when is this renovation due to be complete? I heard the END of 2009.

Where will the new pool be located?
