T-Rex Restaurant to Open in Downtown Disney Pleasure Island

by Susan Gunelius on October 28th, 2007

disney-t-rex-restaurant.jpgI haven’t been to Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island in quite awhile, so on Wednesday, my family and I decided to have dinner at Planet Hollywood located inbetween Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island.  We parked near McDonald’s in Downtown Disney and had to walk over to Pleasure Island.  Just beyond McDonald’s on the way to Pleasure Island we saw huge construction walls erected with workers busily building behind them.  A huge banner hung on one of the construction walls to let visitors know this would be the location for a new T-Rex restaurant. T-Rex is a new theme restaurant.  The first T-Rex restaurant opened earlier this year in Kansas City, Kansas.  The Downtown Disney restaurant will only be the second location for a T-Rex restaurant, so visitors to Walt Disney World will be able to experience the interactive, pre-historic restaurant before it expands to other parts of the world.  Here are some details about T-Rex from a press release from the company that owns 80% of the restaurant, Landry’s Restaurants:

T-Rex is a unique concept that features dining and retail in an interactive prehistoric environment. The concept is built around water, fire and ice — guests visiting T-Rex will be greeted with life size animatronic dinosaurs that live among cascading waterfalls, bubbling geysers, a fossil dig site and much more.

Interestingly, Landry’s Restaurants also owns The Rainforest Cafe (with locations in Downtown Disney and Animal Kingdom), Chart House and a number of other popular restaurant chains around the world.  I can’t wait for T-Rex to open in Downtown Disney.  Based on the construction I saw on Wednesday,  it’s going to be a long time before the restaurant will open its doors.  I’ve heard speculations of T-Rex opening in early 2008 and Summer 2008.  Summer seems more realistic, but I wish it were sooner.  I know my kids are going to love this restaurant!
