Plans for a Second Disney Theme Park in Japan Come to Screeching Halt

Rumors have been spreading over the past year that Disney was planning to build an urban theme park in Japan. This week, those rumors were put to a grinding halt when Tokyo Disney Resort’s operator, Oriental Land Co. Ltd., announced that the plans it had been working on for the past year with Disney would be canned.

At the end of the day, developers realized an urban Disney theme park in Japan would not deliver the return on investment required to make it worthwhile.

Looks like Tokyo Disney (which is very popular, much more so than Hong Kong Disneyland) will continue to be the place to go for a Disney fix in Asia.

Let’s make predictions – where will the next Disney theme park be? Rumors have been spreading about China and Australia. What about a South American location, like Brazil? Leave a comment with your guess.

The Tokyo Disneyland Monorail in Pictures

Have you ever seen the Tokyo Disneyland monorail in person or in pictures? Check out these pictures courtesy of Flickr for a taste of Tokyo Disney transportation.

The windows are shaped like Mickey Mouse as are the handles for standing guests to hold onto.

The Tokyo Disneyland monorail makes four stops:

Tokyo Disneyland theme park
Tokyo DisneySea theme park
Ikspiari (the Downtown Disney of Tokyo Disney)
Bayside Station (for the Tokyo Disney Resort “Good Neighbor Hotels” such as the Tokyo Bay Hilton)

Enchanted Tiki Room with Stitch Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

Today is the day that the newly refurbished Enchanted Tiki Room attraction opens in Tokyo Disneyland with a new name, The Enchanted “Tiki Room: Stitch Presents ‘Aloha E Komo Mai!” and a new audio-animatronic performer – Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.

According to the Tokyo Disney website, Stitch will join the Tiki birds, Tiki gods and guests by “blundering” through the show. People who have seen the show are reporting online that it’s cute. You can see a few pictures of what appears to be Stitch in the center of the room amidst the Tiki Birds at DeepDisney.

Tokyo Disney Launches Summer Night Entertainment

Special summer entertainment kicked off at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea on July 8th and will run through August 31, 2008.

At Tokyo Disneyland guests can watch the Starlight Dreams fireworks show over Cinderella’s Castle. The theme for this show, which was created to help celebrate the Tokyo Disneyland 25th Anniversary summer, is meant to reflect Disney guest and Disney character dreams and memories.

At Tokyo DisneySea, guests can join in the Bon Fire Dance. This summer nighttime festival is back again at Arabian Coast but with a new theme – “matsuri” which means Japanese Festival. Guests can enjoy performances and dances with Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters.

Tokyo Disneyland Hotel Grand Opening Celebration

The new Tokyo Disneyland Hotel officially opened today, July 8, 2008, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Tokyo Disney Resort and bringing the grand total to three hotels now on Tokyo Disney Resort property (Disney Ambassador Hotel and Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta are the other two Tokyo Disney Resort hotels). The new Tokyo Disneyland Hotel is positioned in front of the main entrance to Tokyo Disneyland Park.

The new Tokyo Disneyland Hotel is the largest Disney Hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort with 705 guest rooms. You can make reservations and view pictures on the official Tokyo Disneyland Hotel web page.

Tokyo Disneyland Introduces Discounted Tickets for Seniors

Shane from The Tokyo Traveler pointed me in the direction of some news about Tokyo Disneyland’s 25th anniversary today.

Tokyo Disneyland is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and in March a new discounted ticket was launched for seniors (ages 60+) in an attempt to appeal to Japan’s aging population.

The Tokyo Disney senior ticket costs approximately $330, which is a 22% discount off of a regular one-day pass for adults. It’s valid for admission to either Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea, and it can be purchased for a specific date (“dated ticket”) or with no date (“open ticket”). An open ticket is valid for one year from date of purchase.
